Comparison of the Suitability of Silicon and Germanium as Materials for the Fabrication of a Near Infra Red Photonic Band Gap Crystal

Calculations based upon the solution of Maxwell’s field equations have shown that for some periodic dielectric structures, the propagation of EM radiation becomes forbidden in certain lattice directions. By direct analogy with the propagation of electrons within semiconductor materials, a frequency range can exist for which no electromagnetic modes will propagate. The forbidden optical frequency range is known as the photonic band gap, and the structures are known as photonic crystals.
